Investing in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Training is highly beneficial for employers, as it supports both employee wellbeing and business performance. MHFA equips employees with the skills to identify, support, and refer colleagues experiencing mental health challenges, building a healthier, more productive workplace.

Key benefits include reduced absenteeism and staff turnover, enhanced workplace culture, improved productivity and morale, a reduction in stigma around mental health and a more resilient workforce.

How to measure return on investment

Before anyone attends the course, collect some baseline data, this could be found in HR record keeping systems.

  • Absence data for the last quarter and the last year, reasons for absence, length of absence, number of episodes of absence per employee
  • Survey results including staff engagement
  • Staff turnover figures
  • Customer satisfaction records

Every quarter following the MHFA training monitor the following:

  • Absenteeism rates – Are the reports of absence relating to mental health issues falling?
  • Run staff surveys to monitor engagement – Has this increased?
  • Measure outputs - Has productivity increased?
  • Send out a post-training questionnaire, has engagement, job satisfaction and organisational support increased?

If you have a rolling programme of training, this could also be conducted a year after the first training session.
