A Strategic Priority for Teesside Employers

Poor mental health continues to cost UK employers an estimated £51 billion every year through presenteeism, absenteeism and staff turnover. At the same time, 63% of employees report experiencing at least one characteristic of burnout, creating significant challenges for productivity, engagement and retention.

For employers in Teesside, these challenges are often amplified by wider socioeconomic factors, health inequalities and increasing demand for local support services. As a result, businesses can face additional pressures when it comes to employee wellbeing, absence management and retaining skilled staff.

Investing in workplace mental health is no longer simply a wellbeing initiative. It is a strategic business decision. Research shows that for every £1 invested in mental health support, employers receive an average return of £4.70 through improved productivity, reduced absence and stronger employee retention.

For Teesside organisations, proactive investment in mental wellbeing can help build healthier, more resilient teams, strengthen organisational resilience, and support long-term business performance.

Poor mental health costs UK employers £51 billion a year for employees

New mental health research from Deloitte has revealed that the cost to employers of poor mental health is £51bn per year*, a decrease from £55bn in 2021, but an increase from £45bn in 2019.
